ACUHIAM-ASUNICAM (Association of Catholic Universities and Higher Institutes of Africa and Madagascar) is an organ of the Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (Sceam). It was founded in Abidjan, in October 1989, by five institutions: Facultés Catholiques de Kinshasa (FCK.), Institut Catholique de l'Afrique de l'Ouest (ICAO), Catholic Institute of West Africa (CIWA), Catholic University of East Africa (CUEA), Institut catholique d'Afrique centrale (UCAC).

Governed by a General Assembly and an Executive Committee, the association today covers the whole continent and Madagascar. The three official languages are English, Portuguese and French.

In the preamble to its statutes, ACUHIAM-ASUNICAM sets out to work "for the integral promotion of mankind and for the needs of the Churches and societies of Africa. These establishments intend to contribute to their development as qualified instruments of evangelization". The association also intends to remind member institutions of their Catholicity in its twofold dimension: openness to all without exception; but also promotion of their Catholic identity in its faith and ethics.

ACUHIAM-ASUNICAM subscribes to the spirit and objectives of the International Federation of Catholic Universities (FIuc), of which it is a regional member. Its vocation is to create synergy between the various African Catholic institutions, to encourage and promote inter-institutional cooperation.
